When you’re on the road, you have plenty to worry about. Driving your RV safely on the highway really is a full-time job, so the last thing you should be thinking about is your car tow dolly.
While a tow dolly isn’t a vehicle, there are still some questions circling around regarding whether or not your dolly needs a registration, license plates, or title. We’d like to help you determine what paperwork you do need to have with you on the road, so your dolly is fully protected.
Does Your Tow Dolly Need a Title?
We previously discussed whether or not you need a tow dolly registration – for a detailed explanation, you can review our previous blog post. However, because tow dollies are used for recreational purposes, solely to pull front wheel drive vehicles, they do not require registration in the majority of states.
That means your dolly does not need registration, or tags, while you’re on the road – but what about a title?
A title merely signifies that the dolly in use belongs to you, and verifies your purchase. Most dollies do come with a title upon purchase. While it’s probably won’t be asked for, it’s important to carry your tow dolly title with you, to prove ownership of your dolly.
When you purchase an EZE TOW Car Tow Dolly, a Federal Compliance decal with an assigned and attached VIN number is placed on your dolly, along with the manufacturer’s original title. That way, in case something happens, you can account for your dolly.
What Else Do You Need While Driving a Tow Dolly?
While registration isn’t required for your tow dolly, it’s important that the towed vehicle has an up to date license and registration information, along with your respective RV or towing vehicle.
Additionally, you do not need any specific type of driver’s license to operate your dolly. You’ll be able to transport your car, truck, or SUV on your dolly, with your current license and registration information.
When you’re on the road, there are a few important things to remember, so you can have a safe and smooth towing experience during your travels:
- Travel with all-important pieces of paperwork and documentation
- During stops, check your tire straps and safety chains for security
- Make sure your braking system is clear and free to operate
- Do not go at highly accelerated speeds, it is complicated steering for your car and tow dolly
